Man, this is a really good album. A classic. Always reminds me of nights in college where I had this on my iPod in bed. I think I must have fallen asleep to this record for like a month straight. Initially it took me a bit to get into, which I attribute to the first track. For some reason it didn’t grab me immediately like the first couple albums did. Then again, those albums started with 10 outta 10 slammers.
In hindsight, you can kinda see where Danzig was gonna go with the fifth album. To my ears, you can hear hints of the industrial sound he was gonna go into on number 5. I think it works well here, where I did not like number 5 at all. This record keeps that classic Danzig sound, but uses those industrial tinges as little accents or build the mood. And it I think it works so well because it still has the core lineup of Danzig, John Christ, Erie Von and Chuck Biscuits. The biggest mistake Danzig ever made was dismantling this lineup. They just sounded so good together, and it is a shame John Christ never got the credit I feel he deserved. Danzig’s voice still sounds amazing on this one. He’s at the top of his game here. I would say the second biggest mistake Danzig made was self-producing future albums. I think he benefits greatly from having a different producer.
I think my favorites off the album are Going Down To Die, Until You Call On The Dark, Bringer of Death, and ironically, Brand New God. That opener did grow on me. But honestly, if you are ok with industrial-light flourishes, this whole album is fantastic.
I had my iPod playing as a second source as this album finished. Maybe I should get this one on vinyl too. It’s a really fun record.
